Have You Considered a Career in Teaching?

Florida has thousands of unfilled teaching positions and a flexible path into the classroom — here's what it looks like.

Florida is one of the fastest-growing states in the country, and the schools haven’t been able to keep up. Right now there are thousands of unfilled teaching positions across the state — and that’s before you account for the next several years of population growth. For a young person trying to pick a career with real job security, education is one of the most under-considered options on the table.

What makes teaching different

Most professions box you into one credential path. Teaching doesn’t. You can major in education, math, science, history, English, psychology — almost any subject — and use it to enter the classroom. STEM educators are in particularly short supply, so a science or math background is an open door.

What it takes to get certified in Florida

The standard pathway:

  1. Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
  2. Florida-approved teacher preparation program (typically 1–2 additional years, often integrated into your bachelor’s if you major in education).
  3. State certification exams in your subject area + general knowledge.
  4. Background check and fingerprinting.
  5. Florida Teacher License issued.

Private schools may have their own additional hiring criteria layered on top.

What the day-to-day looks like

A teacher’s job isn’t just lecturing. It’s designing lessons, grading work, meeting with families, mentoring students, building curriculum, and being the steady adult in a young person’s week. It’s hard. It’s also one of the most concretely meaningful jobs in any community.

The competitive advantage right now

When supply lags demand by this much, you graduate into a market that wants you — not one you have to fight your way into. Combined with summers off, retirement benefits, and the genuine satisfaction of the work, it’s worth a serious look.
