Althea McMillan, a Miami-Dade County Public school teacher in the 1980s, observed promising students dropping out due to premature pregnancies, mirroring her own experiences as a 15-year-old dropout from a high-crime, economically challenged neighborhood in Miami. Aware of the cyclical struggles her students faced, particularly those from single-parent households lacking the necessary resources to break generational patterns, McMillan was driven to address these issues. Consequently, she dedicated herself to educating both youth and parents on emotional, mental, physical, and spiritual wellbeing, aiming to disrupt the cycle of broken individuals and family relationships. This commitment led to the establishment of Be Strong International, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, in 1992. Over the years, McMillan diligently expanded the organization, garnering community recognition and securing their first grant in 1998. Today, Be Strong International continues its mission, equipping youth and parents with the necessary tools to overcome adversities, succeed, and embody the Be Strong lifestyle.
